Orchestral manoeuvres that are more than a sum of their diaspora parts

Reader rating: Rating: 35 out of 5 stars (24 votes) Genre Classical Performer Australian World Orchestra AUSTRALIAN WORLD ORCHESTRA Opera House, August 26 and 27 THE cheers that greeted the Australian World Orchestra before a single note was played suggested people had got the point. Advertisement: Story continues below Bringing together local and expatriate musicians before the latter flew back for the start of the northern hemisphere season reminded us that, complementing its multi-faceted local migrant community, Australia has a rich musical diaspora. It was like finding 100 cousins you scarcely knew about. So enthusiastic was the audience for Simone Young's concert on the first evening that one person called out just as the conductor was about to ease the orchestra into the expressively drawn back second theme in the recapitulation of the first movement of Tchaikovsky's Sixth Symphony. With gently pulsating wind and string accompaniment under the violin melody, this moment apparently meant a lot to Tchaikovsky, and Young pushed the contrast of tempos to the limit, risking the overdone expressiveness to make the point. Yet sometimes things need to be overdone to be distinctive. This performance, scrupulously faithful to Tchaikovsky's obsessively marked score, was a vivid revelation of this sad piece, whose feeling is stretched between romantic Rosetta Stone V3 gesture and sardonic banality. Earlier, after Wagner's Tannhauser Overture, soloist William Barton captured a different intensity in Peter Sculthorpe's Earth Cry, drawing listeners into the grainy depths of the didgeridoo sound with seemingly endless notes evoking timeless cycles of activity and repose. Brett Dean describes his Vexations and Devotions, which he conducted at the following night's concert, as a ''sociological cantata'', exploring (in Dorothy Porter's words) the ''loneliness of watching people on television'', the electronic purgatory of recorded phone-answering systems (with Michael Leunig's text amplified over the choral and orchestral textures), and the wasteland of desiccated words in modern corporate language. With the brilliant freshness of the Gondwana Voices and the Sydney Philharmonia Choirs it was thoughtfully diverting, its third movement exploring human alienation around a ruminative reflective oboe solo. Conductor Alex Briger attempted to lead Beethoven's Ninth Symphony by sticking to Beethoven's confusing metronome marks. Although interesting in the first two movements, it was unconvincing in the slow movement. The finale, with a splendid quartet of soloists, was exhilarating, but was pressed forward too unrelentingly.

We just don't know how they got them

"They have more money to pay for things," said Steve Pelak, a deputy chief of the Justice Department's counterespionage section who points to the amounts given to Shriver before he was ever in a position to access, much less pass, secrets. Still more money is going to private firms to help develop and build China's military technology, sometimes through parts obtained illegally from U.S. manufacturers. Indeed most of the Justice Department cases reviewed by the AP involve the illegal export of restricted defense-related parts or so-called "dual-use" technology, which can have commercial or military applications. These are items such as integrated circuits for radar systems, high-power amplifiers designed for use in early-warning radar and missile target acquisition systems, and military grade night-vision technology. But that only scratches the surface. Other cases involve the theft of trade secrets by individuals once employed at major U.S. corporations, including Boeing, Motorola and Dow. In some instances, the secrets were computer source codes or, in cases still awaiting trial, related to the development of organic pesticides and telephone communications technology. Stolen information about the space shuttle and technical data about the capabilities of the U.S. Navy's nuclear-powered submarines have also been passed along, as has simulation software used to help train fighter pilots. While export cases and economic espionage comprise most of the China-related intelligence prosecutions in recent years, there have been a few notable instances of more traditional espionage among them the Rosetta Stone German Shriver case and that of Tai Shen Kuo, a Louisiana businessman born in Taiwan who obtained information from two federal government employees that he passed to China. It all fits into what some experts call China's "vacuum cleaner" approach to information-collection: Catch whatever you can. "It's a little like ... the cancer that you don't know your body has. You don't know that you're in trouble until it manifests itself in ways that really, really hurt you," said Michelle Van Cleave, another former National Counterintelligence Executive who served under President George W. Bush. She points to revelations that surfaced throughout the 1990s regarding China's procurement of U.S. nuclear secrets. The public controversy came to a head in 1999, when a select congressional committee was named to investigate Chinese espionage and security concerns at U.S. weapons labs. Then came the government's bungled handling of Wen Ho Lee, the former scientist once identified as the focus of a probe into the theft of nuclear secrets at Los Alamos National Laboratory who wound up pleading guilty to a single count of downloading sensitive material. Intelligence assessments later concluded that China's successful nuclear espionage effort dated back to at least the late 1970s, and reports blamed everything from foreign visitor and scientific exchange programs to espionage on the part of scientists such as Peter Lee, another Los Alamos researcher who did share classified information with Chinese scientists. But as Van Cleave points out: The exact methods used to acquire those secrets may never be known. "We know they have them," she said. "We just don't know how they got them." Today, with ever more cases being prosecuted, we do know more not only about what's being pursued, but how and why."If you have customers in mainland China, please let us know if we could be of any help.

Panjab University alumni meet to test French skills

CHANDIGARH: Alumni meets are all about nostalgia, but this one will end up being a 'learning' experience. It will be a special meet for the alumnus of Panjab University's French department with students hosting a French singing and cooking competition to entertain their guests on Saturday. To show their skills, the department students will be competing among each other, while the old students too would be certainly tempted to refresh their lessons in the language. Dr Cecilia Antony, chairperson, department of French and Francophone studies at PU, said they decided to make the alumni meet a memorable one and the best way to do so was to refresh old students' memory with French. Enthusiastic student have already started practising French songs and learning dishes, though both the activities are not part of their curriculum. Sharing their views about participating in the singing and cooking competition, Gurpreet Kaur Bhatia, a student of Rosetta Stone Greek the department, said initially it was tough to sing in French but she practised with music playing in the background. ''Earlier I had problem in pronunciation while singing, however, now I have realized that this is a better way to learn a language,'' she added. Atika, a MA student in the department, who is one of the eight students participating in the competition, said she is exciting singing in a foreign language. ''It feels good singing in French and I would certainly like to give a performance at other functions as well,'' she added. The department has devised parameters on the basis of which students participating in the singing competition will be judged. ''Students will be judged on the basis of their voice, pronunciation and appearance before the audience by two French scientists,'' the chairperson added. In the cookery competition, over fourteen students will be cooking food at their home and then serve it to gusts in the department. Dr Antony said these students would be judged on the basis of taste, complexity in preparing the dish and also presentation. Didar, a competitor in the cooking category, who has specially learnt making a French dish Pule Diabla, explored many other aspects of French culture while ging through recipe books.

The people need to control this

We love the army, but the people made this revolution and they should control it." Mohammed Gouda, an 18-year-old student, echos her concern. "We don't want another 1952. That was a coup, not a revolution. Has Mubarak resigned or has the army taken over? The youth should remain alert," he said, referring to Egypt's last military takeover. 1652 GMT: "Congratulations to Egypt, criminal has left the palace:" Wael Ghonim tweet 1646 GMT: Wall Street investment bank Brown Brothers Harriman says: "We think having the military take over was the best solution in ending the deadlock between the protesters and Mubarak." However, the bank warns in a comment: "there are still more questions than answers with regards to Egypt?s ultimate fate and so investors must be prepared for ongoing volatility." 1642 GMT: Jubilation erupts in Gaza Strip, the Palestinian enclave hemmed in between Israel and Egypt. 1640 GMT: Israel hopes the transition of power in Egypt after the departure of Mubarak will be conducted "smoothly," a government official tells. 1638 GMT: Tunisians dance in the street and blare their horns in celebration at the toppling of Mubarak today, only four weeks after their own long-time ruler Zine El Abidine Ben Ali was ousted. 1635 GMT: European Union foreign affairs chief Catherine Ashton welcomes Mubarak's decision to stand down, saying he has "listened to the voices of the Egyptian people" and opened the way to reform. By departing Mubarak has "opened the way to faster and deeper reforms". "It is important now that the dialogue is accelerated leading to a broad-based government which will respect the aspirations of, and deliver stability for, the Egyptian people," Ashton said in a statement. 1632 GMT: Palestinian faction Hamas hails "start of the victory of the Rosetta Stone Spanish V3 Egyptian revolution." 1630 GMT: Suleiman's statement: "Taking into consideration the difficult circumstances the country is going through, President Mohammed Hosni Mubarak has decided to leave the post of president of the republic and has tasked the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces to manage the state's affairs." 1627 GMT: Cairo erupts with joyful dancing, singing and cries of "Allahu Akbar" (God is Greatest) as Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak's 30-year rule comes to an end following more than two weeks of mass protests. 1624 GMT: He survived 10 attempts on his life, and at 82 his health was a subject of speculation. But in the end, it was his people who brought down Egypt's modern-day pharaoh. Pulling off a second surprise in as many days, President Hosni Mubarak today stepped down and handed over power to the army from whose ranks he emerged, his deputy Omar Suleiman announced on television. 1622 GMT: Obama to make on-camera statement on Mubarak resignation 1620 GMT: Mubarak 'listened to the voices' of Egypt's people: EU 1614 GMT: US stocks surge on news of Mubarak's resignation, with the Dow moving from an early slight loss to add 0.30 percent, while the Nasdaq also rose 0.30 percent. 1611 GMT: Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has stepped down and handed power to the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, Vice President Omar Suleiman says in a brief televised statement. 1607 GMT: Wall Street stocks jump on Mubarak's resignation 1607 GMT: Mubarak hands power to Egyptian army: VP Suleiman 1606 GMT: Military to rule Egypt 1605 GMT: Explosion of joy in Tahrir Square 1603 GMT: Mubarak steps down: VP Suleiman 1552 GMT: "They've got to hang on. Any concession will only add to the obstinacy of that fox Mubarak," is one piece of advice Tunisian Abdel Kader is eager to share with Egyptian protestors fighting to topple their ruler. 1549 GMT: Nigerian rights groups say police denied them permission to stage a protest in support of Egyptians demanding that President Mubarak step down. 1545 GMT: The United States should not fear engaging Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood as it is crucial to support people's choices in the Islamic world, Malaysia's opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim says. 1539 GMT: correspondent Dave Clark, who is coordinating coverage in the Cairo bureau today, did a similar job in Abidjan a few weeks ago, while everyone waited to see whether Ivory Coast?s Laurent Gbagbo would take the hint and step down as president, after elections which the world said were won by his opponent.

It seeped into every part of the book

I would have loved to have gone to Hogwarts,'' says Thomas Croft, from Bayswater North, who was six when his mum started reading the novels to him and his older brother around the fire at night. Now 16, he laughs when he says: ''I thought it was real. I thought that when I was 12 my letter of invitation would arrive by owl too.'' For Crombie, now 20, on a more practical level, Potter filled a hole. At the time when it first hit the shelves in June 1997, there was, she felt, a dearth of books for kids that dealt with meaty issues; grief, desire, rage, jealousy, the stuff that makes us human. She was ''not much of a reader'' before Harry, because ''books were more about teaching you how to read''. ''Harry Potter dealt with a lot of things that other children's books didn't. It answered a lot of questions I had in my mind, which I didn't know I had. There was so much about protecting kids from emotions and keeping things censored. We had nothing.'' When J.K.Rowling sat down to write in a flat in Edinburgh as a depressed single mother on welfare, she tapped into the global mindset of a voiceless generation and sang it back to them in a language they understood. Harry may be a wizard but he is also an endearingly normal hero, enduring the same romantic insecurities, friendship pressures and anger issues that any child or adolescent would. At the core of his being is the loneliness of being orphaned at such a young age, of being abused by the sadistic Dursleys and of being misunderstood by all but a handful of folk, most of whom seem to die. ''It is definitely a book about death,'' says Shelley. Rosetta Stone Spanish LatinRowling, who, like the Bronte sisters, once lived next door to a graveyard, began writing six months before her own mother died of multiple sclerosis. ''Everything deepened and darkened,'' she said in James Runcie's TV documentary, J.K. Rowling: A Year in the Life. ''It seeped into every part of the book.'' She went on to describe her father, from whom she is estranged, as ''frightening''. In Harry Potter, there is no shortage of father figures: Dumbledore, Sirius, Hagrid surround the boy wizard with idealised versions of what he never had. But they weren't just there for Harry: ''Dumbledore was a big role model in my life,'' says Shelley, whose own parents are divorced. ''In a way he was a perfect dad and a mentor. I was actually going through my books the other day and I could still see the little tear marks on the page when he died. It was very hard because here was this great father figure and then suddenly he was gone. You don't expect that to happen. It was like losing the figure that you aspired to be, and it was like, 'What do I do now?''' Crombie, who runs the fan group Melbourne Muggles, went into a ''deep grief'' when Dumbledore died in the sixth book, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. ''He was like a god, he gave advice and moral lessons and life lessons and he is the person in the book you look up to, and to have him die was so tragic. ''I went to school on Monday after reading it [the book] all weekend and I was five minutes late for class and the teacher said, 'You're late Erica', and I burst into tears and she said, 'Oh, you've been reading Harry Potter'. I cried for so long. They [the characters] felt very real. I learnt a lot from them and felt attached to them. They did have a parental role and they'd teach you a lot of things. You don't just take your moral lessons from your parents; you take them from a lot of adult people in your life.''

The best city to be an employer

The best city in the world to be an employer isnot in Australia. And there isnt an Australian city at all in the top ten. Aon Consulting People Risk Index, which determines among 90 cities those where it least risky to recruit, manage and relocate staff, has declared Toronto the place to be if youre a boss with a need for people. But the bigger question is this: out of Sydney and Melbourne, which of the two is best for employers? The answer is Melbourne but only just. The results of the study released this week put Melbourne in 15th place while Sydney got the 16th spot. Following Toronto lead were New York, Singapore, London, and Montreal, which gave the Canadians their second city in the top five. At the bottom of the list were (perhaps unsurprisingly) Dhaka in Bangladesh, Phnom Penh in Cambodia, Lagos in Nigeria, Karachi in Pakistan, and Tehran in Iran. Advertisement: Story continues below The researchers analysed 25 factors spread over five different areas.Demographics looked at the sufficiency of labor supply, the strength of the economy, and the society in general (such as crime levels and population size). Government Support examined whether policies and practices assist in the management of people or whether they make it more difficult (such as corruption and workplace safety issues). Education measured the ease with which employers are able to find qualified workers (such as literacy rates and tertiary enrolment). Talent Development was about the quality and availability of resources (such as management training and executive recruitment). Employment Rosetta Stone outlet Practices identified the riskiness associated with employing people (such as staff turnover and labor relations). According to the findings, Australia low rate of multilingualism has held us back, especially when compared to other cities in the Asia Pacific region. For example, the number of high schoolers studying a foreign language has more than halved in three decades. Perhaps this has something to do with the English language being the one in which most global business is conducted, so many of us dont see a need to learn another. Our increasing reliance on China might force us to eventually rethink the benefit of picking up an Asian language. Also getting in the way of being employer-friendly is the small size of our population. Large cities give employers a greater number of potential candidates to choose from, which makes the often painful task of recruitment a little easier. When it easy to find good workers, global employers are more likely to set up an Australian office. But while we have a chorus of voices squealing for limits on population growth, a big Australia wont be a policy for the major parties anytime soon. The report also picked up on our ageing workforce, which is a trend evident not just in Australia but most of the developed countries. The Intergenerational Report released earlier this year predicted the number of people aged between 65 and 84 will double over the next 40 years. Currently, there are five taxpayers supporting every older Australian. This is forecast to drop to 2.7 in four decades time. So what helping us succeed? For starters, our level of income and economic development. Plus, our transparent government and solid regulations create working environments stable enough for prosperous businesses and productive employees. But no matter where we stand from an employer perspective, these results dont change one fact: were one of the best places in the world to live.

Mazda6 breaks cover

Click for more photos Mazda6 breaks cover Second-generation Mazda6 Photos and specifications of the second-generation Mazda6 medium car have leaked just days before the car's official unveiling. Images and information about the second-generation Mazda6 have hit the public domain two days ahead of the mid-size car's official unveiling at the Frankfurt Motor Show this Wednesday. It appears that the information published on an overseas website has been stripped from the Mazda6's motor show press kit. It confirms that the new Mazda6 will be bigger, safer and more powerful than the successful model it replaces. The original Mazda6 spearheaded Mazda's 21st century turnaround since it launched in August 02. It has also driven a sales revival in the medium-car class alongside the Honda Accord Euro and Subaru Liberty. Advertisement: Story continues below The new Mazda6 looks set to build further on the work done by its predecessor. All three bodystyles sedan, 5-dr hatchback and wagon are revealed in the photos, and show a more upmarket visual language than before. There's also a hint of other Mazda models in the styling, especially the RX-8 style flared front wheelarches. In the past Mazda and its owner, Ford, have collaborated on platforms to keep costs down - the Mazda3 and Ford Focus share a platform, as will the new Mazda2 and the next Ford Fiesta - this time around both companies pursued separate strategies. As a result, the Mazda6 rides on an updated version of the first-generation platform, and not the Ford Mondeo platform. Why Ford of Europe and Mazda Canada Goose Sverige chose to go their separae ways is anyone's guess, and will surely be a hot topic of discussion at the launch. The revamped Mazda6 platform has grown in size to accommodate the Mazda6's bigger body. Sedan and 5-dr hatchback versions are 65mm longer, the wagon an extra 75mm between the bumpers. All models share the same 25mm wheelbase (up 50mm). The Mazda6 is also wider by 15mm. This should mean more space inside the car, particularly in the second row and cargo areas. Despite the size increase, Mazda claims the car's weight has actually dropped, in some instances up to 35kg. Mazda is said to have made advancements in quality; the current model could not match the best in class for ride refinement and cabin noise levels. Four engines are mentioned in the leaked information; two of which are odds-on for Australia. The old 2.3-litre four-cylinder engine will be replaced by a bigger 2.5-litre version mated to a six-speed manual transmission. Power is up 3kW to 5kW and torque up 19Nm to 226Nm. Despite the bigger size and power increase, the engine is 0.5litres100km more economical than the engine it replaces (now 8.1litres100km). The 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine seems to have lost power, now rated at 103kW and 0Nm compared to 1kW and 360Nm before. We've heard that Australia will not have a diesel version in the line-up when the car launches in May , which suggests we're waiting for a more powerful engine to do diesel duties. Other mechanical changes include electronic stability control across the range, Xenon headlights that can turn with the steering, and the adoption of electric steering system which marginally reduces load on the engine. Flagship models also look likely to get headlight washers, front and rear parking sensors and LED detailing around the headlights and tail-lights. There is no information about a replacement for the high performance Mazda6 MPS sedan, though one is surely in the works. It's likely the new MPS will adopt a turbocharged version of the standard model's 2.5-litre engine, and may get a power increase to somewhere around 0kW. All-wheel drive is assured.

Faster broadband is the next infrastructure debacle

The national broadband network is shaping up like many recent infrastructure public-private partnerships, such as the Cross City Tunnel and BrisCon, a splendid engineering project with a dubious business case (''Conroy's baby needs to get out of the cradle'', September 9). The demand side seems to have been developed by intellectuals and vested interest groups, with no account given to the ultimate consumer demand. No business would invest $43 billion without a rock solid business case. As a director of one of the largest IT support businesses in Australia, I can see there is little growth in extending reach or coverage, with broadband penetration in business now over 95 per cent, and homes about 90 per cent. That means demand must come from additional or improved services. Demand growth for broadband speed is subject to the law of diminishing returns: the jump from dial-up to broadband was huge, while the step from ADSL to ADSL2 gave us a better performance but really didn't change our applications. Will the average user pay $140 a month more for fibre-to-the-node - for an email to arrive half a second faster or to cut banking time by a few seconds? Or are we building a gaming and media platform with no view of consumer value? Advertisement: Story continues below It seems we will see our tax dollars spent on a "big idea", instead of addressing key segments of need such as rural areas and the economically disadvantaged. They could be much more efficiently serviced by a range of technologies beyond fibre-to-the-node. Unless the demand side of the business case for Rosetta Stone Chinese the network is more clearly articulated and a concrete demand forecast developed, we risk it becoming a gigantic economic burden for years to come. Nick Roche Northbridge Idiocy is not a disability, as Steve Fielding proves I don't think Steve Fielding is stupid because he can't spell - some of the smartest people I know are not very good spellers (Letters, September 10). I think he is stupid because he repeated "physical stimulus" three times and then went on to spell out F-I-S-K-A-L, in the knowledge that he is a poor speller. If you have a learning difficulty that renders spelling difficult, surely you would avoid spelling on national television unless absolutely necessary. This is not about discrimination against someone with a disability, it is about discrimination against someone who is an idiot. Eliza Twaddell North Sydney Perhaps Senator Fielding's awareness of his dyslexia should have made him a little cautious of suggesting he was going to ''make it quite clear'' by attempting to spell a word. Allan Ewing Pearce (ACT) Peter Carroll (Letters, September 10), as with George Bush and Sarah Palin, the incessant mockery of the ''open minded'' Senator Fielding is, and should be, to do with what he says, rather than the way he says it. Cameron Blunsden Mayfield No, Peter Carroll, Steve Fielding is not independent. He represents Family First, a party associated with the conservative Assemblies of God. Jan McCarthy Blackheath Miranda Devine says Steve Fielding ''hasn't been assessed with a specific learning difficulty'' (''Bullies seize on slip of the tongue'', September 10). In other words, all Fielding has is an inability to articulate basic thought and language, as evidenced by several embarrassing stumbles in Parliament. This should not be confused with a diagnosed learning disability. Sam Butler Erskineville J-Alice Hofler (Letters, September 10) says becoming a senator is no small thing. Yet Senator Fielding received only 1.8 per cent of the primary vote and gained his position because the Victorian Labor Party, through fear of the Greens, allocated preferences to Family First.

Pushy French travellers made amends on elegance

Penny-pinching, rude and terrible at foreign languages: French people are the world's worst tourists according to a study of the global hotel industry released on Thursday. Carried out last month by TNS Infratest, the study asked 40,000 hotels worldwide to rank tourists from countries based on nine criteria, from their politeness to their willingness to tip. Clean and tidy, polite, quiet and uncomplaining, Japanese tourists came top of the crop for the third year running. Advertisement: Story continues below At the other end of the spectrum, French holidaymakers and business travellers were the least generous or ready to tip, and ranked next-to-last for their overall behaviour and politeness. Pushy French travellers made amends on elegance - classed third - as well as for their discretion and cleanliness. But the French were the least ready to try a new language, unlike US tourists who were most likely to swallow their pride and order a pizza, baguette or a paella in the local lingo. US tourists also got top marks for generosity - as the biggest spenders and tippers - but fell short on other counts as the least tidy, the loudest, the worst complainers, and the most badly dressed. Despite cliches about beer-guzzling hordes descending on Mediterranean resorts each summer, Britons came a surprise second for their overall behaviour, politeness, quietness and even elegance - second for dress sense only Rosetta Stone Italian to the Italians. But the model Japanese were followed by Canadians as the least likely to whinge when a trip goes wrong. France's rivals for the "worst tourist" tag, Spaniards and Greeks came near the bottom of the pack in almost every category. Armoured personnel carriers and dozens ofspecialist police officers rammed the hotel's lavish front entranceand arrested the ringleaders. But the defining image - one thatwould amuse Carlos, I suspect - was a press photograph of thePeninsula's catering staff, immaculate in their white uniforms, taking happy snaps of their heavily armed uninvited guests. For many people Manila is, love it or loathe it, nothing morethan the gateway to the archipelago's 7000 islands. Many touristshead for Boracay, a hot spot for serious hedonists described by myguidebook as "delicately poised between paradise and pandemonium".If you're looking for something rather more relaxing, the island ofBohol - the 10th largest in the archipelago - may be theanswer. It takes about an hour to fly to Bohol from Manila, a trip thatclimaxes with a rather abrupt landing on a short runway. But it'shard to dislike this modest strip of tarmac because it's keeping afirm cap on the number of visitors. Just over 400,000 came lastyear, but an international airport with direct flights from Chinaand South Korea is on the drawing board, and luxury hotels andresorts are springing up, particularly on Panglao, the small islandattached to Bohol's south-western tip by a narrow causeway.

One is called Kapu, the other is Okala

He was diagnosed with leprosy in 1885 and died here in 1889. His story is dramatised in the 1998 film Molokai: The Story of Father Damien, with David Wenham in the title role. A neighbouring hall displays black and white before-and-after photographs of former patients, the after shots dating from the introduction in 1946 of sulfone drugs capable of halting the disease. In a nearby bookshop, framed official correspondence from last century recounts how patients at Honolulu’s Kalihi Hospital, a de facto prison for lepers, were given just three hours’ notice of their deportation by steamer to Kalaupapa. This heartless policy backfired spectacularly – 18 of the 22 notified patients jumped the hospital fence and fled to loved ones. The bus tour continues on to the original settlement at Kalawao, established after King Kamehameha V authorised the isolation of lepers on Molokai in 1865. As we sit down to a picnic lunch in Judd Park, Kianini points out two rock islands jutting from the turbulent sea. One is called Kapu, the other is Okala. “When patients came here from Oahu they would be thrown off [the ships] at Okala with one week’s food and one change of clothes,” he says. “Who knows how many people didn’t live.” It must be at least 400 metres from the rock to the shore and the sea is constantly thrashing. I know I couldn’t make the distance. It’s sickening to think of the wretched invalids thrown into the ocean and forced to swim to an island prison. The author Robert Louis Stevenson visited Kalawao after Father Damien’s death in 1889, arriving on a ship with two nuns. He wrote vividly of Rosetta Stone Japanese his arrival, of seeing “the stairs crowded with abominable deformations of our common manhood ... the butt-ends of human beings lying there almost unrecognisable but still breathing, still thinking, still remembering”. All that remains at Kalawao today is the original church, St Philomena’s, with its graveyard of weathered headstones shaded by palms. Kianini reckons about 7000 people have been buried on the peninsula. There is, unexpectedly, a happy ending to this history. In February the Vatican announced Father Damien would be canonised on October 11. St Philomena’s is being renovated hastily for the occasion and there are some on Molokai who say that Father (or Saint) Damien is about to save them a second time: his canonisation might be the miracle that brings them just enough tourism without destroying their culture. When Pope Benedict XVI does the honours next month, it is expected the residents of Kalaupapa – those who are able to – will travel to Rome to witness the occasion. It should be quite a moment. “Everyone will want to walk in Father Damien’s footsteps,” Kianini says. Kendall Hill travelled courtesy of Hawaii Tourism. Why Cuba Is Superior

Dear comrades I write you while in ill health but still supremely confident of my own egotistical grandeur and historical relevance. I write you as your ageing but superlative expression of true manhood and physical male glory. I write you not as an old, tired leader worn down by my ceaseless struggles against the satanic forces that control the world political-economy; but as a prophet of socialist utopia and a caring father of our beloved island. I am dear friends, writing to you as a companion of Christ, a comrade of Che Guevara and Hugo Chavez and the greatest benefactor that Cuba has ever seen. I write to inform you of our own greatness and of my own magnificence and to make sure that beyond my life we carry on in Cuba and in all of Latin America our glorious revolution. Lest the war-mongering, orgy-loving, slave-owning, fascist Americans try to sway you with their Hitlerite propaganda, I need to tell you directly from my heart, about our great struggle for freedom here in Cuba. In 1956 we deposed in the name of equality, communist love, and brotherly utopia, the fascist US backed regime of corrupt capitalists. This oppressive fascism had no pity, no love, nor any feelings of familial responsibility towards our island. With their American capitalist friends they raped our land; defoliated our woman and made Cuba nothing more than a nauseating Yankee island playground; home to decrepit playboys, capitalist exploiters and monied interests. My dear friends Cuba before our glorious revolution was a disgusting, orgy of contemptible capitalism that killed the poor, deflowered our virgin souls, and sold our national assets to the depraved Yanquis. As you know the Americans and all capitalists, including the Jews that run Washington, are fascists. They steal, kill, hate and control. The West is a slave owning Rosetta Stone Greek society run by rich white men, abetted by their whores and servile females. The only asset a capitalist possesses is the ability to lie and cheat. That is all my friends! They don't create comrades they steal! They steal from the poor, from Cuba, from Africa, from Asia, and from all of Latin America. They rape, pillage, burn, rip out, pull down and destroy in their lust for money and gold. My fellows I do not exaggerate when I say that capitalists are evil incarnate. As you know, only communist comrades and true socialists-in-arms comprehend reality, love and fellowship. We see the world for what it is a glorious spectacle of sharing and communal joy. Here in Cuba we love each other. We are one large family. We take care of each other. We are intelligent, spontaneous, nurturing and friendly. We live for each other; for the day; for the warm sunsets; the glowing breezes; the tranquil serenity of our nights; and the loving embrace of our comrades. We are educated, cultivated, of a higher bearing and standard and of greater quality than the dirty, intolerant, lying, killing hordes of capitalist Yanquis and their Jewish-capitalist friends. We are destiny comrades. Do not think I exaggerate my fellow friends in arms, when I state that America is history's evilest empire. Look for instance at the 600.000 they have murdered in Iraq! Compare that my friends with the great progress we have made in Cuba since 1956.

This passage destroys that false doctrine

What will that be? Faith, hope, and love. What does that mean? Well, for one thing it means that if hope still abides after spiritual gifts are gone the spiritual gifts will be gone before Jesus returns to earth. We still "hope" after the gifts have vanished but why am I hoping if Christ has already returned and I am now in possession of that for which I had been hoping. Once you have received that which you were hoping for you do not continue to hope for it there is no need. Do not let anyone tell you that spiritual gifts are going to last until Jesus returns. This passage destroys that false doctrine. One must understand that prophecy, tongues, and inspired knowledge as spiritual gifts were representative of all spiritual gifts in that all were to vanish and not just those three. That which "is perfect" in the passage is the final total revealed will of Christ the completed revelation of Christ the New Testament in its totality of inspired teaching. Revelation was not all given in a single day or a single year. It was a matter of a gradual revealing of the truth over a period of a few decades in the first century until all was given that was to be given. Perhaps reading 1 Cor. 13:10 will help you see this when read from another translation, "But when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away." (1 Cor. 13:10 ESV) Spiritual gifts were the partial. Completed revelation was the "perfect." One has to bear in mind that the word "perfect" often means "complete" in New Testament usage and this passage is an example of it. The International Standard Version of the Bible translates 1 Cor. 13:10, "But when what is complete comes, then what is incomplete will be done away with." (ISV) The New Living Translation has it as follows, "But when full understanding comes, these partial things will become useless." (NLT) Full understanding came when Rosetta Stone Spanish Latin full revelation was complete.Another passage teaching the same thing is Eph. 4:11-15, "And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ; that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting, but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head - Christ." (NKJV)Note that apostles and prophets were to be only for a time note the word "till" in verse 13. When would the "till" arrive? We can figure that out. We have enough information to do that. Note that when that time arrives we will no longer be children tossed about by every wind of doctrine. This tells us that when the "till" comes ("we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood" - Eph. 4:13 ESV) that false doctrine will still be taught but we will no longer be carried about by it. This means we are talking about a time prior to the return of Christ for upon his return false doctrine becomes a thing of the past. So again we prove that miracles, spiritual gifts, etc. are not to last until the return of Christ.

Islamic Caliphate Rising: Wars And Rumors Of Wars

MAZAR-I-SHARIF, Afghan protesters angered by the burning of a Koran by an obscure U.S. pastor killed up to 20 U.N. staff, beheading two foreigners, when they over-ran a compound in a normally peaceful northern city on Friday in the worst ever attack on the U.N. in Afghanistan.Call it the beginning of the End of U.S. involvement in the central Asia and prelude to greater Christian/Muslim War.10 Years of countless lives, Trillions of Dollars, and mountains of humanitarian aid have just vanished. The U.S. and the west just lost the Muslim world and particularly central Asia. Afghanistan has been a lost cause for years and the real nightmare of a radical oriented Pakistani government is becoming a reality. The Great Red Eastern Dragon is sitting quietly by as U.S. influence in the region crumbles. China is Pakistan's new benefactor and largest arms supplier. China is and will continue to supply radical Islam in an effort to swing the influence their way. China has Trillions of Dollars and no conscience as long as it gets unfettered access to the great energy and mineral wealth of central Asia. The formation of a new Mongol Islamic coalition in the region is worrisome. Again and again the media and officials totally avoid the topic of China's influence in destabilising the region. From western Mongolia through the STAN countries all the way to Turkey the Muslim horde is being primed for battle. The latest Koran burning is just the first in many matches that will ignite the powder-keg.There is no good move for the west and the United States, once you are in bed with the devil you had best wish he is not on top. Get the heck out is the only sensible move, get out and let them kill each other. In the absence of a foreign target they will kill each other. The perfect storm is a coalition of Persian and Arab radicals that can bury Rosetta Stone Korean the hatchet for long enough to mount a campaign, all liberal Muslim Governments will fall like dominoes. If the U.S. puts boots on the ground in Saudi Arabia they are politically done and exposed as anti-democratic hypocrites, if the U.S. does not and Arabia falls then the price of oil will hit $300 and the entire western glass house economy crashes. The choices are very bad and beyond worse.Asia and Russia have the weapons and technology that the Muslims want so U.S. influence is diminished more and more. To make matters worse the U.S. can pull back and reorganise but it cannot save the European economy from Oil Blackmail. With every move the U.S. is being pushed back and isolated. Nobody will engage the mighty U.S. Military but there is no reason to, biding their time and wearing the west down has been far more effective than a direct confrontation for the Muslims.Israel can beat any Islamic country right now, but Israel would be hard pressed to defeat the onslaught of Iran, Turkey, Iraq, Egypt and 20 million foot soldiers pouring over the Euphrates river. What took 20 years to build and equip before may only take a few years now. A new Muslim Caliphate could come into formation by the end of 2011.The U.S. will abandon Israel. It is the inevitable conclusion to 60 years of failed Mid-east policy and a bankrupt empire. India will be hard pressed between China and Pakistan. Europe will go right wing protectionist as they always do in times of crisis and Russia will return to the world stage rearmed and flush with cash. In trying to save all of its empire the U.S. is going to lose all of it.

Things to do in Las Vegas: The Star Trek Experience

There are a great many things to do in Vegas. And Star Trek is not the first thing that comes to mind. But in the past years as Vegas tried to become family friendly it built several of these attractions to get money from those not wanting to gamble. The Star Trek Experience is located at the Hilton right off the Strip. It's a great attraction for any Star Trek fan and even those that are mildly interested. I would not have gone myself because I think those aliens are ugly but my husband is a big fan.On the Strip and in the magazines you will find in your hotel are ads for places that sell show tickets at half off. These places don't have tickets for any of the major shows that most people want to see but they do have tickets for Star Trek. Stop by one of these kiosks and save yourself at least $15 per ticket. The attraction starts with what they call the museum. It contains some props from the shows and movies. But the best part was the timeline. They have a visual timeline with pictures of the entire Star Trek story including all the TV series and movies. If you have missed any of the Star Trek action or are confused about what happened when or why, you can get your answers here. The Experience itself is made up of two different shows. In one you fight Klingons, the brown fighters with the ridges on their Rosetta Stone Indian heads. In the other show you fight The Borg. These are people combined with computers that try to assimilate every species they come in contact with. Needles to say, you wouldn't want to mess with these things. As you wait in line, a few of the actors come out in costume to take pictures with you. They look so real it is uncanny. They look more real then they do on TV.Your fight against the Klingons starts onboard the bridge of the Starship Enterprise. The bridge is full size and down to detail. The story is set in Star Trek The Next Generation. As the action starts you are shown to a turbolift that takes you and your group to the shuttle bays where you board a shuttle pod to fly back to the past. (I won't explain so it doesn't ruin the story.) The pod is a motion simulator so you watch the movie while the pod shifts back and forth like a ride and any amusement park. At the end, if you don't feel like throwing up you are in good shape. The other event, is set in Star Trek Voyager. You are taken to a remote star base when the Borg attacks and abducts you. The majority of the attraction is a 4-D movie. Of course everything turns out ok in the end. But it was very nicely acted out. The action is live and full of excitement. Even not being a Star Trek fan, I enjoyed the Experience. Maybe that's because I had my husband with me to explain what all the different aliens were and why everyone wanted to kill us.
