Encourage Social Skills in Children: Danny the Dragon Author Offers Tips

Tina Turbin, author of the rosetta stone version 3
celebrated children's book, Danny the Dragon Meets Jimmy, is not only cherished for her contribution to children's literature, but also for her work in championing important issues to improve the lives of children, particularly through actively advocating parental involvement in children's lives. One of the ways she recommends to parents how to increase involvement is by supporting your child's education and helping him achieve academic success. "An important part of this, which parents don't often think about," Tina says, "is by teaching your kids the social skills they'll need to succeed in school."Tina's interest and involvement in issues such as family, women, and children in society blossomed when she married and became a mother at the age of twenty-one. Since then, she has demonstrated her dedication to bringing awareness to these issues in her many endeavors as a humanitarian, researcher, and children's author. Here she offers some tips for parents on how they can send their child to school with the social skills they need to successfully interact with teachers and other students.First, it's important to teach your child to ask for what he needs. How can he get help unless he's able to admit he doesn't understand something? A great way to instill this in your child is to practice it at home. Tell him to ask you about any words he doesn't understand when he hears them. In fact, you can tell him that during reading time, you're going to use some new words he probably doesn't understand and tell him that whenever he hears one, he should politely ask you Rosetta Stone French
what the word means. After he practices this, tell him teachers also like to know when their students don't know words. One of the most important things you can teach your child is manners. Teachers may attempt to teach students politeness and social skills, but if it's not being practiced in the home, the child will not successfully absorb these lessons. Your child should be taught when to say, "please," "thank you," and "excuse me." Have him practice sharing things, taking turns, and waiting his turn in line. Make sure to be respectful and polite yourself in both your own interactions with others as well as with your child, especially when you're correcting your child's social manners. Also, refrain from using foul language in front of the children or avoid TV shows or movies, or even certain friends and neighbors, who indirectly or directly influence your child to act out. Dinnertime is a great time to practice using manners. Your child will enjoy seeing the whole family use the same words and phrases he's taught to use.Point out good examples of behavior to your child when you see it. If you're watching a movie or out in public, you can say to your child something such as, "Did you see how the man held open the door for the lady? He was being a gentleman." Similarly, when your child says "please" and "thank you" appropriately, tell him that he did a great job. You'll find that when you acknowledge his successes in interacting with others, he'll continue to repeat the praised behavior in the future. Finally, rehearse at home anything your child may feel awkward saying or doing with Rosetta Stone French Levev 1-5
other people. For instance, your child may have a hard time asking others if he can play with them. You and one of his siblings can pretend to be other kids at school playing a game, and he'll practice approaching and asking if he can play, too. He may also have problems participating in class because he gets nervous. You can pretend you're the teacher and have him sit down and raise his hand when he knows an answer. When he tells you the answer, make sure to give him lots of praise for getting it right. In such a way, you'll be able to get your child interacting with others with ease.Success in school isn't only determined by academic skills and knowledge. "Parents need to establish the foundation of strong social skills so their children can interact with his teachers and classmates at school," Tina says. By following the helpful tips above in the time you spend with your child, you'll notice an improvement in your child's education experience in no time as they become more comfortable in their learning environment and better equipped to flourish in it.For more information on Tina Turbin, visit. For more information on Danny the Dragon

How To Make Your First Semester at College a Success

You've already faced one of life's biggest Rosetta stone language
challenges: getting into college. You did it! Congratulations! The next challenge is to take full advantage of everything your college has to offer, get good grades, all the while having a great time. As someone who worked on the Stanford University Dean of Student's staff (and was in charge of a dorm with many freshmen), I have some personal advice about making your first semester the beginning of four of the best years of your life. In a nutshell, my advice is to START STRONG.I. ARRIVE ON CAMPUS AS EARLY AS YOU CAN Sometime during the summer, colleges usually notify freshman students when in the fall they can move into their residence halls or other housing. There are so many reasons why you should move in as soon as the doors open. To begin with, in order to feel comfortable in your new space, you need to get unpacked and that's going to take a little while. No doubt, there will be some things you have forgotten to bring and the best time to go shopping is when Mom and/or Dad are still around and before school starts. You also need to meet your roommate/s and figure out how you-all are going to share the spacence your gear is unpacked, the room is arranged and settled, it's time to explore the campus and figure out where everything is, including the libraries, the gym and workout spaces, the student union (and other places where students gather) and best places to study.II. CAREFULLY CHOOSE YOUR CLASSES To make your first semester a success:Sign up for the minimum number of classes (usually 12 units). There's going to Rosetta Stone Arabic
be plenty of time for you to take all of the classes you need. Don't fall into the trap of thinking you need to prove your academic prowess by taking a much larger than average number of classes. Also, don't get into the game that some students fall into of bragging about how tough a schedule you're taking on ("I'm taking 20 units, how about you?") It's important that you give yourself time to adapt to college life, including managing your schoolwork, activities and all the myriad of other things that a college has to entice you.Choose classes that you know you will do well in. In other words, based on your experience in high school, sign up for courses in which you can get A's, regardless of the content. Are you good at English, love history and have spent time as a Madrigal singer? Sign up for classes in those areas.Don't fall into the trap of taking the hardest math, science, or whatever classes available to show other students how smart you are. Frankly, no one is going to care, and you might just get yourself into academic trouble. You don't want to do that.Ask upperclassmen who the good professors are. See if there is a college website Rosetta Stone Arabic Levev 1-3
that offers teacher evaluations.

Companion Robots To Improve Elderly Peoples

To this end, special emphasis is being put on the Rosetta stone software
development of algorithms for the automatic modelling of the external environment of the robot, this updating being ongoing, as well as on methods for programming movement trajectories and control.Therapeutic treatment and careFinally, the project involves the design and development of therapeutic treatment and assistance/care in daily life. In concrete, the daily life of the elderly or disabled persons is managed, content for their cognitive stimulation generated, reminders to take prescribed medication given and data on the state of their health analysed. In order to maintain the person under care in contact with their environment, audiovisual communications with family members and carers will be established. All the techniques investigated in the Companionable initiative will enable elderly people to increase their independence and to stay a longer part of their lives in their own homes while being able to look after themselves. In the case of Spain, a survey undertaken by the Centro de Investigaciones Cientficas (CIS) revealed that more than 80% of elderly persons over 65 prefer to stay in their own homes, even when they need help. The work of the Tecnalia Health and Quality of Life Unit in the development of the Companionable projectThe Tecnalia Health and Quality of Life Unit is carrying out a number of technical initiatives within Companionable, Rosetta Stone Indian Levev 1-3
notable amongst which is the viability of monitoring of sensors for everyday life (Life Style Monitoring, LSM). These sensors record the activities and routines of the life of the user in his or her home, by means of the reading of various domestic devices. The function of the LSM is to learn and memorise the habits of persons, thanks to a passive monitoring of the domestic environment obtained from sensors and other apparatus. In this way, sensors recognise situations that are out of the habitual routine of the user. Such deviations from the regular habits can be interpreted as symptoms of a crisis or as problems related to health, in which case an alert can be activated which is directed at a carer or a family member.Another focus of this Tecnalia work involves person-robot interaction. The goal is to generate a simple and intuitive relationship between person and machine. In this sense, this technological centre is developing a robotic body language and a robotic facial expression in order to communicate, in a non-verbal manner, the internal state of the robot. The Tecnalia Health and Quality of Life Unit is carrying out a fundamental role in interfacing with the touch screen of the robot the principal means of interaction between user and machine. Current work involves designing a device that is user-friendly, easy-to-understand and adapted to all the needs of the Rosetta Stone Greek Levev 1-3
elderly.Tecnalia is participating in the development of the Companionable project, in which 18 European partners from seven countries are taking part. Project leader is the University of Reading (the United Kingdom), the others being the Tecnalia Health and Quality of Life Unit, the Ingema Fundacin, the University of La Corua and Sabia (all based in Spain); the Hospital Broca, Legrand, ESIEE, Esigetel, GET, d Evry University (IBISC) from France; the Austrian Research Centres, AKG and CURE from Austria; Lab-in-Ham in Belgium; Smart-Homes from the Netherlands; and the Ilmenau University and Metralabs from Germany. The project is due to finish in 2012.

B vitamins slow brain atrophy in people with memory problems

The two-year randomised clinical trial is Rosetta stone software
the largest to study the effect of B vitamins on mild cognitive impairment, and one of the first disease-modifying trials in the Alzheimer's field to show positive results in people.Around 1 in 6 elderly people over the age of 70 has mild cognitive impairment, experiencing problems with memory, language, or other mental functions, but not to a degree that interferes with daily life. Around half of people with mild cognitive impairment go on to develop dementia -- mainly Alzheimer's disease -- within five years of diagnosis.Certain B vitamins -- folic acid, vitamin B6 and vitamin B12 -- are known to control levels of the amino acid homocysteine in the blood, and high levels of homocysteine are associated with an increased risk of Alzheimer's.So the Oxford team set out to see whether supplements of the B vitamins that lower homocysteine could slow the higher rate of brain shrinkage, or atrophy, observed in mild cognitive impairment or Alzheimer's.The study followed 168 volunteers aged 70 or over with mild memory problems, half of whom took high dose B vitamin tablets for two years and the other half a placebo tablet. The researchers assessed disease progression in this group by using MRI scans to measure the brain atrophy rate over a two-year period. The findings are published in the journal PLoS ONE.The team found that on average the brains of Rosetta Stone Indian Levev 1-3
those taking the folic acid, vitamin B6 and B12 treatment shrank at a rate of 0.76% a year, while those in the placebo group had a mean brain shrinkage rate of 1.08%. People with the highest levels of homocysteine benefited most, showing atrophy rates on treatment that were half of those on placebo.Along with rate of brain shrinkage, the team from the Oxford Project to Investigate Memory and Ageing (OPTIMA) also monitored cognitive test scores, revealing that those with the slowest rate of shrinkage scored more strongly. The team suggests that, since the rate of brain atrophy is known to be more rapid in those with mild cognitive impairment who go on to develop Alzheimer's, it is possible that the vitamin treatment could slow down the development of the disease. Clinical trials to test this should now be carried out, they add.'It is our hope that this simple and safe treatment will delay the development of Alzheimer's disease in many people who suffer from mild memory problems,' said Professor David Smith of the Department of Pharmacology at Oxford University, a co-leader of the trial. 'Today there are about 1.5 million elderly in UK, 5 million in USA and 14 million in Europe with such memory problems.'These are immensely promising results but we do need to do more trials to conclude whether these particular B vitamins can slow or prevent development of Alzheimer's. So I wouldn't yet recommend that anyone getting a bit older and beginning to be worried about memory lapses should rush out and buy vitamin B supplements without seeing a doctor,' he said.Rebecca Wood, Chief Executive of the Alzheimer's Research Trust, which co-funded the study, said: 'These are very important results, with B vitamins now showing a prospect of protecting some people Rosetta Stone Greek Levev 1-3
from Alzheimer's in old age. The strong findings must inspire an expanded trial to follow people expected to develop Alzheimer's, and we hope for further success.'We desperately need to support research into dementia, to help avoid the massive increases of people living with the condition as the population ages. Research is the only answer to what remains the greatest medical challenge of our time.'Professor Chris Kennard, chair of the Medical Research Council's Neurosciences and Mental Health Board which co-funded the study, said: 'This MRC-funded trial brings us a step closer to unravelling the complex neurobiology of ageing and cognitive decline, which holds the key to the development of future treatments for conditions like Alzheimer's disease. The findings are very encouraging and we look forward to further research that is needed in order to test whether B vitamins can be recommended as a suitable treatment.'

Human Approach To Computer Processing

Researchers in the School of Computer Science at the Rosetta stone language
University s Malaysia Campus are exploring granular computing a computer paradigm that looks at groups or sets of information, called information granules, rather than the high level of detail at which data is currently processed.By looking at data in this way, new patterns and relationships emerge which could potentially give us access to new types of computer modelling in a range of fields, including process control and optimisation, resource scheduling and bioinformatics. The concept of a granular approach to computing is inspired by human thought processes, according to Professor Andrzej Bargiela, Director of Computer Science at Malaysia Campus. Creating abstractions from detailed information is essential to human knowledge, interaction and reasoning, said Professor Bargiela. The human brain filters the flood of information and distils knowledge subconsciously. We can observe such an information processing Rosetta Stone German Levev 1-5
pattern not only in scientific domains but also in fine arts and in natural language conversation. When an artist paints a picture they are not focussing on photographic accuracy, they focus on the artistic message and use brushstrokes to simplify the reality in a way that is conducive to conveying that message. We remember conversations, but we don t remember every word the raw data we remember the meaning, gist and nuance in other words the abstractions of the conversation. That is the basis for distilling human knowledge and understanding. We process a huge amount of information second by second. If we were aware of every single thing, our minds would be overloaded. The flood of information would choke us. The human mind uses the method of information abstraction to cope with the sensory overload of everyday life. It is thought that the granular computing approach to information processing may capture this essential characteristic of human information processing and offer a breakthrough in dealing with information overload in a broad spectrum of application domains. Several PhD projects supervised by Professor Bargiela test this hypothesis in the context of varied applications, including urban traffic monitoring and control, job scheduling, timetabling and protein classification. Other applications that will be explored in the near future include environmental modelling and assessment of potential of under-utilised crops. Technology allows us to capture an enormous amount of information, but making most of that information represents a significant challenge, Professor Bargiela explained. Over the last decade granular computing research has been gradually developing mathematical foundations for information granulation and granular Rosetta Stone Italian Levev 1-5
modelling of systems. We have been part of this research development from the very nascent stages of granular computing. It is extremely exciting to see that the age-old paradigm of human information processing only just starts to be formalised as a well-founded method in computer science.

Sun, Sea And Sickness: Better Technology Aims To Improve Healthcare On Travel

Whether it is for business, leisure, visiting rosetta stone version 3
friends and family or education, Europeans are frequent travellers making hundreds of millions of trips abroad each year. This sort of mobility of people, products and services is enshrined in European Treaties. It is good for economies and good for everyone. But one area in particular still causes headaches. Getting healthcare while travelling can still be tricky for many Europeans, despite a long-standing legal framework for healthcare provision across Member States. The situation got better with the launch of the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), entitling European citizens to equal access to healthcare in another Member State if needed. But EHIC s arrival in 2004 has proven to be no silver bullet. Awareness of its benefits is still quite low among Europeans. Meanwhile, support systems administrative and technological have struggled to keep pace with growing leisure travel and labour mobility.Welcome Rosetta Stone Japanese
announcementBut European initiatives are keen to do something about that. Two projects developing IT-based services for cross-border healthcare provision, TEN4Health and NetC@rds eEHIC ID, have agreed on common European messaging standards that link hospitals and other healthcare providers with health insurance organisations, and with national healthcare IT infrastructure. The common web services agreed by the EU-funded projects are specified in WSDL, a web-services description language, and messaging is communicated through XML, a software mark-up language for documents containing structured information, like healthcare records. The agreement is considered a major step towards full interoperability of web services throughout the European healthcare sector. With this agreement, we are paving the way for a European standard supporting the necessary communication and data exchange processes for cross-border healthcare in Europe, commented an EU official close to the projects.Pain-free treatment? It means if an Austrian or German breaks his leg on a jet ski in Italy or the Netherlands, he can get equivalent healthcare to what he might expect in his home country. And now the healthcare provider can reliably and quickly determine that the patient has valid health insurance, making reimbursements faster and less painful.TEN4Health and NetC@rds are both co-funded by the EU s eTEN programme for market validation and initial deployment respectively.

Discount Rosetta Stone Community Based Vetiver Propagation Programme

Vetiver plants are abundant in Rosetta stone
Madagascar and are found growing along the perimeters of fields and rice paddies and in rural pasturelands, where it is reputed that they were originally imported and planted by missionaries and latterly farmers, for erosion control.N?ffke has seen plants with clump sizes that indicate they could be over 60 years in age.He commented that another use made of the young Vetiver plants was as grazing for domestic animals – the juvenile plants are palatable. He made the point that no Vetiver plants were imported into the country for the project. Some of the families involved in the project sourced parent material from their farming locations close to the rehabilitation sites and were paid for the material, while others were given slips of the parent material to grow on in community nurseries of their own making.Hydromulch briefed the villagers on the correct cropping and trimming procedures and demonstrated sustainable harvesting methods – removing material without damaging the parent plant. They were also encouraged to identify and collect viable strong material and often travelled great distances to source suitable material.Potting bags and Vetiver planting material in the form of slips were delivered to the communities that had chosen the propagation route. The growers filled the bags with a suitable growing medium and planted the slips. Open ground nurseries were also encouraged, so that the growers could establish a stock for future demand. Along with the potting bags, the growers received fertiliser sticks, spades, rakes, plastic watering cans and wheelbarrows. The families were paid for the initial planting process Rosetta Stone Spanish
, with a second payment being made once the plants were satisfactorily established with well-developed root systems.According to N?ffke, establishment takes between three and six weeks during which time regular watering is needed. The communities selected for the propagation process were close to reliable water sources. Some communities are involved in the post-establishment maintenance of the plants and are being paid accordingly.Once established, the plants were collected by Hydromulch ready for planting out into the harsh roadside environment. The communities or families in the various villages are subsistence farmers that grow mainly rice, while those on the coast are fishermen. In the Mangaiky Village, ‘Andre’s community’ has propagated over 230 000 Vetiver plants to date and, in the same village, the Auguste family has propagated in excess of 250 000 plants. In the Mangarivotra Village, the ‘Antahova Community’ will soon reach their target of 80 000 plants, while Maria Agnes’s family from the Mandromdromotra Village has grown 100 000 plants. These are some of the 35 groups involved in this programme, supplying the on-site holding nursery with stock. A total of in excess of two million Vetiver plants has been used for erosion control on the project. The community based programme has already generated in excess of US$ 150 000 for the respective communities, Rosetta Stone Spanish (Latin America) Levev 1-5
during the construction phase of the Ilmenite Project. The local farmers have invested their returns in buildings and stock. Farmer Auguste built a large robust house with the income his family received, while Madame Marie Agnes built a secure house for herself and her grandchildren from the income generated through Vetiver propagation.Andre David Mahalogny from the Mangaiky district bought six Zebu cattle with the proceeds generated by his family’s Vetiver nursery. With the money he earned, Farmer Arthur carried out the traditional restitution ceremony at his father’s grave, while Farmer ‘Jonesey’ is educating his children with the payment received for the 240 000 Vetiver plants grown by his family.
